Creating a District
Boulder’s four-block long pedestrian mall is a hub of vitality. The City wanted to extend that energy westward and delineate the West End district with a distinctive streetscape vernacular including wider sidewalks, new landscape, and stone street furniture. Vermilion was engaged to create a series of six “totems” to mark the cross streets from 10th to 8th along Pearl and draw visitors to the end of this eclectic retail area. The totems, fabricated locally, use buff sandstone, internally illuminated artisanal fused glass, and poetry from Boulder artists to draw people into the heart of the West End.
