Questions, answered. FAQs we get about our agency, clients, services, and working with Vermilion.
About Vermilion
What does your agency do, exactly?
We’re an integrated brand, creative, and marketing agency. We often help clients in close to full-service ways as an extension of their own team. We help organizations clarify who they are, connect with the right audiences, and grow through brand strategy, creative services, digital marketing, advertising, and website design. In practice, that can mean anything from messaging and visual identity to campaign development, website redesigns, and ongoing marketing support.
How large is your agency?
We tend to hover between 15 and 20 full-time employees. We’re intentionally right-sized: large enough to take on large-scale projects and bring senior-level expertise, and nimble enough to move quickly and stay collaborative. That means our clients get thoughtful, high-touch partnership without unnecessary layers.
Where are you located?
We’re based in Boulder, Colorado. We’re a fully-remote team spread across the Front Range of Colorado, with one employee based in Wisconsin. We work with clients across Colorado and throughout the U.S., from coast to coast.
How long have you been in business?
We’ve been in business since 1980. Over that time, we’ve built a reputation for thoughtful strategy, strong creative, and long-term client partnerships. We’ve maintained our core mission to use our marketing expertise for good, since day one.
What is a creative agency, exactly?
A creative agency helps organizations communicate clearly and compellingly through strategy, design, messaging, and marketing. At Vermilion, we think of creative as a business tool, not just an aesthetic exercise.
What makes your agency different from others?
We combine strategic rigor with creative clarity, so the work doesn’t just look good — it works hard. Our approach is collaborative, senior-led, and grounded in helping clients make smart decisions, not just more noise. We also proudly tick most of the full-service marketing boxes, from strategy to websites to performance marketing, while the agency world is becoming more siloed and focused on singular service areas.
Why should I use a creative agency over a freelance designer?
A creative agency brings strategic depth, cross-disciplinary expertise, and a coordinated team that can handle brand, web, and marketing needs together, in an integrated way. Freelancers are great for specific tasks based on their expertise, but agencies like Vermilion provide end-to-end creative strategy and execution across a variety of brand and marketing deliverables. The agency approach ensures consistency and long-term results, without time or capacity constraints that often come with a solo freelancer.
How do you use artificial intelligence?
We use AI thoughtfully as a tool to support research, ideation, and efficiency — not as a substitute for purposeful strategy, creative originality, or human judgment. Our process is still led by experienced people who know how to ask better questions, shape stronger ideas, and protect your brand.
Vermilion's clients
What types of clients do you work with?
We work with organizations in search of meaningful growth and who understand the value of strong strategy and creative execution. Our clients range from purpose-driven brand and startups, to nonprofits and foundations, to established companies and enterprise teams. A filterable list of our client expertise, along with case studies, can be found on the Work Page.
Do you work with startups?
Yes! We work with startups, especially when they’re ready to build a strong foundation for growth. We’re often most helpful when a startup needs a sharp brand strategy, a visual brand identity to break through, a website that takes them to the next level, or a focused growth and performance marketing.
Do you work with nonprofits with tight budgets?
Yes, and we understand the realities nonprofits face when balancing ambition with limited resources. When the fit is right, we help scope work strategically so budgets go toward the highest-impact priorities.
Do you work with enterprise organizations with large scopes?
Yes! We often support enterprise organizations with complex needs, multiple stakeholders with layered dynamics, and larger-scale initiatives. Our approach stays strategic and flexible, so the work remains clear and manageable even when the scope is substantial.
Do you work with clients outside of Boulder and Colorado?
Yes! While we’re proudly based in Boulder, Colorado, and we support a great number of client partners in own backyard, we work with clients well beyond Colorado. Geography doesn’t limit the quality of partnership, and we’re set up to collaborate effectively whether you’re local or remote.
How do you ensure organizations and brands outside of Colorado receive the same level of care and attention?
We work with clients across the U.S. and have refined processes for seamless communication and collaboration. Through in-person milestone meetings, video calls, shared project tools, and clear check-ins, every client — local or remote — receives the same attention and partnership as our Boulder-based teams.
Vermilion's services
What services do you offer?
We offer integrated and full-service marketing from strategy, to creative, and web and digital. That includes brand strategy, positioning, messaging, visual identity, website strategy and design, advertising, campaign development, and ongoing marketing support. Depending on the client, that can also include content, digital strategy, and performance-focused creative. See more about our offerings on our Services Page.
Do you offer full-service support, or project-based only?
We do both! Some clients come to us for a focused project, while others engage us as an ongoing strategic and creative partner.
Do you offer ongoing retainer support after the initial project?
Yes — many of our clients continue with us after a specific project launch through a retainer model. That gives them consistent support for evolving priorities, campaigns, content, optimization, and creative needs.
Do you offer website maintenance?
Yes, we offer website maintenance and post-launch support for the sites that we build. Depending on your needs, that can include updates, troubleshooting, performance monitoring, and ongoing improvements.
We have an old asset library, can you help us refresh it?
Yes — we often help clients audit and refresh brand assets to ensure consistency and relevance. Whether it’s business tools and templates, photography, or marketing materials, we can refresh your asset library to align with your brand system and creative standards.
What is the difference between branding, marketing, and advertising?
Branding is how your organization is understood and remembered; marketing is how you create demand and build relationships; advertising is one way you promote your message to a target audience. In short, branding shapes perception, marketing drives connection, and advertising amplifies visibility. And Vermilion supports all of the above, and the nuances in between.
What's the difference between a logo and a brand?
A logo is a visual mark; a brand is the full experience people have with your organization. Your brand includes your visual identity, messaging, tone, and positioning, all working together to build recognition and strike the right uniquely-you tone.
Why do you prefer WordPress over other CMS platforms?
We primarily use WordPress because it’s powerful, flexible, secure, and easy for clients to update. It also offers great scalability, whether you’re managing a small marketing site or a larger, multi-section content hub. Read more about why we choose WordPress in This Article.
Working with Vermilion
Who will we work with day-to-day?
We use a tried-and-true account management model, and each client has an Account Lead who serves as your main point of contact. You’ll work with a small, consistent team that understands your business and keeps the work moving. We structure engagements so communication is clear, responsive, and led by senior people who stay close to the work.
How much do you cost? Do you charge hourly, by project, or on a retainer?
We pride ourselves on being competitively priced while offering services and deliverables that stand out in the crowded marketing agency world. Our pricing reflects the depth of thinking, experience, and care we bring to each engagement. We’re not the cheapest option, and we’re not the most expensive. We’re usually not the right fit for clients shopping on price alone.
We typically work on a project or retainer basis, depending on the scope and type of support needed. In some cases, we may use hourly pricing for smaller engagements, consultations, or work that is harder to define upfront, employing a “time and materials” approach.
Can you work within a fixed budget, and how do you scope that?
Yes, this is preferred! If we know your budget early, we can recommend the smartest way to allocate it. We scope fixed-budget work by prioritizing what matters most, defining clear deliverables, and being transparent about tradeoffs.
How long does a typical branding or website project take from start to finish?
A typical branding project takes about 8 to 12 weeks, depending on scope, complexity, and decision-making timelines. Projects move fastest when there’s clarity around goals, timely feedback, and the right stakeholders involved from the beginning who are empowered with decision-making.
Most website projects take about 20 to 24 weeks from kickoff to launch. The timeline depends on factors like site size, content readiness, technical needs and functional requirements, and how quickly feedback and approvals happen.
How do you approach brand strategy and positioning?
We start by understanding your organization, audiences, market, overall landscape, and goals so we can identify what makes you distinct and why it matters. From there, we develop a clear “Brand Foundation” that guides your messaging, visual expression, and decisions. Learn more about our services on the Strategy Page.
How do you measure the effectiveness of advertising campaigns?
We measure campaign performance against the goals that matter most, whether that’s awareness, engagement, lead generation, site traffic, site conversions, or return on ad spend. We also look beyond surface-level metrics to understand what’s actually driving results and where to optimize.
What all is included in a website redesign package?
A website redesign package typically includes discovery, site strategy, sitemap and UX planning, wireframes, copy and content direction, design, development, testing, and launch support. Depending on the project, it may also include SEO and GEO foundations, analytics setup, training, and post-launch maintenance.
What do you need from us to be successful as a partner, and how involved do we need to be in the process?
The best partnerships are built on clarity, trust, timely feedback, and access to the right decision-makers. We don’t expect clients to have all the answers, but we do need alignment, responsiveness, and a shared commitment to doing the work well. You don’t need to manage every detail, but your input is essential at key points in the process. The strongest outcomes happen when clients are engaged enough to provide context, make decisions, and keep momentum moving. Read more about what makes a great client in this article.
Can you work with our in-house marketing or design team?
Absolutely. We often collaborate with internal teams and can plug in as a strategic partner providing direction, bringing your team’s strategic work to life with executional extension, or both.
What happens if we don't like the initial work?
That’s exactly why we build our process around strategy, checkpoints, and feedback before creative goes too far in a specific direction. If something misses the mark, we talk about why, refine the direction, and keep working toward a solution that feels right and performs well.
Can we speak to current or past clients as references?
Yes, we’re happy to provide references when appropriate. We want prospective clients to feel confident in how we work, what we value, and the experience of partnering with us.
Do you offer any guarantees on performance or results?
We don’t make unrealistic or revenue-related guarantees, because strong outcomes depend on many variables outside any agency’s control. What we do promise is a thoughtful process, honest communication, and work designed to create measurable value.
How do you decide which marketing channels are right for our business?
We choose channels based on your audience, goals, budget, timeline, and where you’re most likely to create traction. Instead of defaulting to what’s trendy, we focus on the mix most likely to deliver meaningful results for your business.
What does the onboarding process look like?
Our client onboarding process begins with a kickoff meeting to align on goals, timelines, and priorities. From there, we organize everything you need — project plan, team introduction, and shared tools — to keep communication transparent and the work moving smoothly.
How do I update my website once the design is complete?
We build websites so our clients can easily manage content on their own through a user-friendly WordPress CMS. We also provide training and support after launch so updating text, images, and pages feels simple and sustainable.
